BC Ferries announced fare charges effective April 1, 2021 for commercial oversize vehicles and created an additional rate class for vehicles greater than 9ft and up to 13ft wide to correspond with the space those vehicles use on the vehicle deck.

As of April 1, the fare per foot for commercial vehicles (vehicles over 5,500 kg/gross vehicle weight) for Vancouver Island-Mainland routes are:

  • $6.87 for up to and including 9ft wide (from $6.62, up $0.25)
  • $13.75 for greater than 13 ft wide (no changes)

As of June 1, 2021, BC Ferries will introduce a new rate of $10.30 per foot for commercial vehicles greater than 9ft and up to 13ft wide (newly added rate class).

After learning about the new rate class late last week, BCTA expressed considerable concern with the new oversize vehicle rate class for vehicles greater than 9ft and up to 13ft wide coming effective April 1, 2021, citing the lack of a phase-in period provided to industry to adjust to the new rate.

Based on the concerns raised by BCTA, BC Ferries has agreed to delay the effective date of the new rate class for oversize vehicles from April 1, 2021 to June 1, 2021. BCTA is not opposing the new rate due to our longstanding policy position that all ferry users, including oversize non-commercial customers, should pay for the space they use.
