After nearly a decade of advocacy, BCTA applauds the Provincial Government for introducing a mandatory entry-level training (MELT) for Class 1 commercial driver’s license applicants. Implementation of a provincial MELT program is essential to protect road users and to help attract and retain qualified drivers to meet BC’s growing transportation needs.
B.C’s MELT for Class 1 driver’s will exceed the minimum requirements set by the National Safety Code Standards for entry-level training. The program, which comes into force on October 18, 2021, was developed with input from an advisory committee consisting of representatives from across the trucking and driver training industry. The program includes best practices from other Canadian jurisdictions with the addition of course curriculum focused on operating practices for BC’s mountainous terrain and diverse driving conditions, to ensure commercial drivers are prepared for B.C.’s highway network and changing weather patterns.
Consistent with other jurisdictions in Canada, B.C.’s MELT program requires a minimum number of training hours of instructional training, in-yard training, and behind-the-wheel driving time. ICBC is the regulatory body for driver training, including certification of schools and instructors in B.C.
The program will be delivered by licensed driver training schools in B.C. beginning in early summer 2021.
