Human Resources personnel and those responsible for driver recruitment are welcome and encouraged to join us on August 31 as representatives from the BC Trucking Association, WorkBC Employment Services, and the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction discuss how carriers can work with WorkBC Centres to attract and retain drivers. WorkBC Centre supports for employers and job seekers will also be shared.

As BC’s economy re-starts, the demand for labour in all sectors is increasing. In June, BC had the second lowest unemployment rate of any province and, more importantly, is the only province so far to surpass the total number of people working today than were working before the pandemic. As BC’s economy continues to re-open and emerge from the pandemic, we can expect a challenging environment for recruitment into the transportation industry.

This year, BC became the last province to adopt a Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) framework for Class 1 commercial drivers. As of October 18, all candidates (except for a few in a transition group) seeking a Class 1 license will need to complete BC’s MELT framework. This framework is a minimum of 140 hours, including a minimum of 50 hours of behind the wheel, on-road instruction. Driving schools will begin to offer MELT training in the coming weeks.
