On January 19, 2022, the Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) reopened to all vehicle traffic between Hope and Merritt.

Temporary fixes have been made to this vital corridor that connects BC’s interior to the coast as the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) plans permanent repairs.  Please note that there continues to be reduced speed limits as well as travel-pattern changes so expect a longer trip time particularly between Hope and Merritt. It is also important to remember that the Coquihalla is a high-mountain route that can experience adverse weather and rapidly changing conditions that could require closure with minimal notice.

MoTI also announced a lifting of weight restrictions from Highway 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet, however is discouraging commercial drivers from using this route due to the challenging terrain. This route also has increased avalanche risk so prepare for delays and check DriveBC.ca before travelling.

Reminder: please drive to conditions and chain-up where required. Commercial vehicles 11,794 kg LGVW and greater are required to carry steel chains on most major highways. BC’s chain requirements are in effect until April 30 in mountain passes and/or high snowfall areas. To find out where chain-up is currently required in BC, click here.
