Kicking Horse Canyon Project Phase 4 construction will require extended 24-hour/multi-day closures of the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) east of Golden during Spring 2023. The timing at this time is approximate, and the following information is subject to confirmation. An update will be issued by February 20, 2023, and the Highway Status Calendar on the project website will be updated on an ongoing basis.

The 24-hour extended closure periods for Spring 2023 are currently expected as follows:

  • Up to five consecutive days within the two-week period between April 1 and April 15, 2023
  • A small number of consecutive days during May 2023

These extended closures are subject to weather and other conditions. During these extended closure periods, Trans-Canada Highway traffic will be routed via Highways 93S and 95, which will add up to 90 minutes to travel time.

Although the duration of the multi-day closures will be relatively brief, due to the current uncertainty regarding precise timing, the Province will again operate a season commuter pass system to reduce the inconvenience to those who are required to travel between Golden and Field, BC /Lake Louise, AB regularly for work. Also, day passes will again be made available on a very limited basis for other exceptional and urgent local trips. Information will be posted on the Commuter Passes page of the project website by early March.

Please note that there will be no closures or stoppages during the Easter long holiday weekend, from Thursday, April 6th at 12:00 noon until Tuesday, April 11th 12:00 noon.

Roadside signage will provide advance notification of the closure and alternative routes. Please refer to the Highway Status Calendar for ongoing schedules, and check DriveBC for the most up-to-date travel information.

Additional extended closures are anticipated for Fall 2023. Information and notifications will be issued by early summer 2023.
