The provincial government plans to widen Highway 1 from 264th Street to Highway 11 and is looking for public input to inform the final project design.

Based on public feedback received during earlier engagement, this next phase of Highway 1 expansion would include high-occupancy vehicle and transit lanes, more commercial vehicle parking facilities, and a section of multi-use pathway parallel to the highway. Details are available in an online discussion guide, found here, along with information about how to share comments and ask questions.

This expansion of Highway 1 will also tie into a new 264th Street Interchange, which will be reconfigured to better serve road users in the region. A request for qualifications will be issued this summer for the 264th Street Interchange project, which would include facilities to improve active transportation, truck parking and public transit in the area.

BCTA regularly surveys its members to identify the top infrastructure priorities for BC’s commercial road industry. Based on the 2023 survey, six-laning Highway 1 from 264th Street in Langley to Hope remains our members’ top priority, along with improving/adding commercial rest areas.

BCTA will be providing a submission in support of widening Highway 1 with the following recommendations:

  1. Government expedite Phase 4 (Widening, Highway 11 Interchange to Vedder Canal) to harmonize with the construction period of Phase 3 (264th Street to Highway 11);
  2. To build all overpasses on the Highway to a minimum height clearance of at least 6m or, if built to a 5m high clearance to provide a bypass (e.g., exit/onramps) to allow oversized vehicles to remain on the provincial road network.

BCTA members and industry are encouraged to participate in this consultation period. The deadline for input is September 15, 2023.
