On November 2, 2021, BCTA met with Kaye Krishna, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, to highlight the discussion topics of the Highway 91/17 Upgrade Project, Provincial Permit Centre Delays, electronic logging devices, speed limiters and the CleanBC Heavy-duty Vehicle Efficiency Program.

To support the commercial road transportation industry, BCTA recommended the following:

  • Implementing electronic logging devices (ELDs) coincident with Transport Canada;
  • Mandating provincial speed limiters on all heavy-duty trucks with a maximum speed set to 105 km/h;
  • Extending the CleanBC Heavy-duty Vehicle Efficiency Program partnership between the Province and BCTA for at least an additional three years;
  • Support for BC’s breakbulk sector through promoting a more efficient road network on Highway 91/17; and
  • Addressing Provincial Permit Centre backlogs through reviewing and simplifying the current regulatory framework for OS-OW vehicles and expediting the development of an online permit system with the ability to support multi-jurisdictional permitting.

BCTA is committed to working with the Ministry of Transportation to support the shared priorities of the commercial road transportation industry. Deputy Minister Kaye Krishna appreciated the opportunity to hear about the range of issues our industry is facing and is looking forward to working with BCTA to support and improve the safety of our industry and continue our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
