In a significant step toward enhancing emergency response capabilities, Salt Spring Island Search & Rescue (SAR) has received $6,000 in funding from the CleanBC Heavy-Duty Vehicle Efficiency (HDVE) Program, administered by the BC Trucking Association (BCTA).

The funding was utilized to incorporate a diesel auxiliary power unit (APU) onto their custom built 2022 Ford F550 command vehicle- the critical operational hub for all search, rescue, and emergency activities conducted on Salt Spring Island and the Southern Gulf Islands.

The APU not only aligns with the CleanBC HDVE Program’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector but significantly enhances the vehicle’s operational efficiency during critical missions.

Michael Cotton, Treasurer of Salt Spring Island SAR, emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, “Our command vehicle is instrumental in executing our mission to keep our community safe. With the support from the HDVE Program, we not only enhance our capabilities but also reduce our carbon footprint. It’s a win-win for our community and the environment.”

The CleanBC HDVE Program, a part of the provincial government’s commitment to sustainability, offers incentives to motor carriers for adopting fuel-efficient technology. Now in its fifth year, this program provides generous rebates of up to $20,000 per vehicle and $150,000 per fleet for approved fuel efficiency devices. By providing funding to companies like Salt Spring SAR, the CleanBC HDVE Program contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious transportation sector in British Columbia.

Year-five of the program will run until August 31, 2024, or until funds are fully allocated, whichever comes first. Learn more about how your company can apply for funding through the CleanBC Heavy-duty Vehicle Efficiency Program by visiting BCTrucking.com.
