Addressing systemic discrimination in the workplace and moving closer to equal pay for equal work is key to closing the gender pay gap, which is why the Province will begin consultations this spring on new pay transparency legislation.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, supported by the Minister of Labour, will be leading consultations to help inform development of the new legislation with Indigenous organizations, public- and private-sector employer groups, business and union organizations, equity-seeking organizations and groups that work to create equal opportunity for women, as well as employers who have already established pay transparency policies.
BC is one of four provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador) without either pay transparency or pay equity legislation. Our province also has one of the largest pay gender gaps in Canada with women making, on average, approximately 20% less than men.
