Trucking HR Canada (THRC) has released their December 2021 industry labour market information (LMI) report- The Road to Recovery: Reassessing Canada’s Trucking and Logistics Labour Shortage.
The LMI report provides updated THRC analysis and their perspective on how the ongoing recovery in the Canadian economy is progressing and the mechanisms driving the demand for key trucking and logistics occupations moving forward. Based on new labour market research conducted in mid-2021, THRC provides further analysis how the demand for drivers was impacted by the pandemic and how the ongoing recovery in the Canadian economy has progressed.
Key findings
The Road to Recovery reports that by the second quarter of 2021, driver vacancies were as high as 18,310, up by 4,330 jobs when compared to the last quarter of 2019, before the pandemic began. THRC’s new demand projections estimate that the number of vacancies will rise to 24,700 in 2025. Almost one third of the surveyed employers report their retirement rates have increased since the onset of the pandemic— 40% of employers have experienced an increase in their voluntary turnover rate. The LMI report also contains THRC’s recent research that has re-evaluated the labour market challenges faced by the industry between 2021 and 2025.
