(September 18, 2023) Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced changes to Express Entry through category-based selection earlier this year. These changes will help address labour shortages and support economic goals by inviting candidates with specific work experience, including those in the trucking industry, to apply for permanent residency.

Today, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that the first round of invitations for transport occupations through category-based selection in Express Entry will occur this week. This focus on candidates with experience in the transport sector—including commercial truck drivers, pilots and aircraft assembly workers.

“As Canada grows its economy, we’re committed to improving transport and infrastructure to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods and passengers across the country. Category-based selection helps us invite newcomers with experience in transport occupations to fill significant labour gaps and ensure the future success of the Canadian transport sector. I look forward to welcoming more skilled workers to our country, as their knowledge and expertise are invaluable, to meet our labour market needs” noted Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

These category-based selection rounds will continue throughout the year, alongside general and program-specific invitation rounds. Late last year, CTA had formally requested that commercial vehicle drivers be included in the category based selection process.

“As IRCC and the Government of Canada know, the economy and the skills that are most needed to sustain it are changing,” said Jonathan Blackham, CTA Director of Policy and Public Affairs. “We would like to extend our gratitude to Minister Miller and IRCC for recognizing the essential role trucking plays in the supply chain and larger economy. This will pay dividends to all industries, sectors and consumers who rely on the trucking industry’s services.”

CTA is also working with IRCC and ESDC on the recent announcement related to the Recognized Employer Pilot, which CTA would like to see include a robust screening process to ensure only compliant companies can participate.
