BCTA applauds the province of BC on its CleanBC Roadmap to 2030 (Plan) released on October 25, 2021, that outlines its plan to achieving provincial emission targets while building a cleaner economy.
“As outlined in the Plan, commercial vehicles are one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions in the province, which is why the fight against climate change is a top priority for BCTA,” said Dave Earle, President & CEO of BC Trucking Association. “The challenge facing our sector, is that zero emission options for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles due their size, required range, and payload capacity, are in the earliest stage of deployment. Because of this, it’s imperative that we actively support their deployment, but at the same time, do more with the tools in our toolbox to reduce our sector’s carbon footprint, such as driver training, adoption of idle reduction and vehicle aerodynamic technology, and vehicle turnover to lower emitting vehicles.”
Considerations outlined in the Plan to help reduce medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicle emissions include:
- Accelerating the switch to zero emission vehicles (ZEV);
- Encouraging faster fleet turnover of oldest, higher emitting vehicles;
- Working with federal government to strengthen emission standards;
- Enhancing the CleanBC Heavy-duty Vehicle Efficiency Program to drive further greenhouse gas emission improvements;
- Encouraging the use of speed limiters;
- Expanding the Low Carbon Fuel Standards; and
- Expanding B.C.’s public charging network.
Through these actions, the provincial target is to reduce energy intensity of goods movement (tonne-kilometres) by at least 10% by 2040, 30% by 2040, and 50% by 2050, relative to 2020.
BCTA looks forward to working with the Province on further flushing out these actions in support of establishing medium- and heavy-duty vehicle targets for our sector in 2023.
