BCTA Applauds MoTI on Changes to Pilot Car Requirements and Travel Times for Oversize Loads
BCTA is extremely pleased that our work with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) has resulted in changes to pilot car requirements and travel times for oversized loads, effective August 25, 2021. After 14 years of advocacy and work that urged MoTI to undertake much-needed, significant reforms to the regulatory system for oversize- overweight vehicles, BCTA applauds the government for supporting and addressing barriers that restrict BC’s oversize-overweight (OS-OW) vehicle sector.

Canada Recovery Hiring Program Available June -November 2021
Beginning June 6, 2021, eligible employers can access the Canada Recovery Hiring Program (CRHP). The CHRP provides support to eligible employers that continue to experience qualifying declines in revenues relative to before the pandemic. The purpose of the program is to make it as easy as possible for eligible businesses to hire the new workers they need so that the economy can recover at a quicker pace.
CVSE Enforcement to Return to Pre-Pandemic Levels
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) Branch instituted some provisional actions which affected how vehicle inspections were conducted and the functions they could perform to follow the advice and orders of the provincial health officer. As BC heads towards the gradual uplifting of COVID-19 restrictions, BCTA would like to remind carriers of pre-pandemic levels of enforcement on the roads in the upcoming months.

Motor carrier members are invited to join BCTA’s Lower Mainland Transportation Issues Committee to discuss and learn about various issues that are being considered by Lower Mainland municipalities and help shape BCTA’s advocacy. The next meeting takes place on June 3, 2021 from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. We’re covering some prevalent topics, and new members are very welcome.

BC Ferries Acts on Recommendations of BCTA BC Ferries Task Force
BCTA's BC Ferries Task Force is making great strides in promoting the efficient commercial movement of goods and people on BC Ferries, including the implementation of a commercial reservation priority phone line, commitment by BC Ferries to explore a commercial fare saver rate for off-peak sailings, and deferment of the new 9’ to 13’ rate class.

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) is conducting a national study on the effect of fuel-efficient driving on crash risk and crash severity in Canada. Minimal workload is required for participating carriers.
