PC-12 Oils: What’s Ahead?
January 2027 might seem far off, but in the world of lubricant development, it’s practically around the corner. The industry is gearing up for a major milestone: the launch of two new heavy-duty engine oil categories, known as PC-12. This development represents significant collaboration between engine manufacturers, oil producers, and additive suppliers to create next-generation lubricants that meet evolving standards and performance demands.
This article dives into what PC-12 is, the reasons behind its necessity, and how Chevron is taking a proactive role in preparing for this transition.
The Challenge: Stricter Standards
The push for PC-12 oils is driven by increasingly stringent emission regulations set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Beginning in 2027, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions must be reduced by an ambitious 90%.
In addition to these reductions, emission control systems will need to last longer, with durability requirements increasing from 400,000 miles to as much as 650,000 miles. To meet these tough new standards, engine manufacturers are innovating with advanced technologies and have called on the American Petroleum Institute (API) to establish updated oil performance specifications. This collaboration has led to the development of PC-12, a critical advancement for supporting the next generation of heavy-duty vehicles.

PC-12: Introducing Two New Categories
To meet the varied demands of heavy-duty engines, the proposed PC-12 will actually include two distinct categories. Currently referred to as CL-4 and FB-4 (pending final names), each category is tailored to enhance performance for different fleets and technologies:
- CL-4: This category will replace CK-4 oils and is backward-compatible, making it a versatile choice for fleets with a mix of old and new vehicles. For operators managing equipment of varying ages, CL-4 ensures smooth integration without compromising on performance.
- FB-4: Replacing FA-4 oils, FB-4 is specifically engineered for modern engines that benefit from low-viscosity oils. These oils help improve fuel efficiency and overall engine performance, making them ideal for newer, fuel-conscious fleets looking to maximize uptime and economy.
Both categories are designed to cope with the challenges of modern engine design, including higher operating temperatures and tighter tolerances. In addition, they offer improved oxidation stability, enhanced wear protection, and reduced levels of components like phosphorus and sulfated ash. This ensures they are compatible with and protective of advanced emission control systems.
Chevron’s Solution: Delo® 600 ADF
Chevron is at the forefront of this transition with its innovative Delo® 600
ADF, the first ultra-low-ash heavy-duty lubricant specifically built to meet PC-12 standards. This cutting-edge oil is designed to address the evolving needs of modern diesel engines while protecting aftertreatment systems from harmful deposits.
Delo® 600 ADF features 60% less sulfated ash compared to traditional heavy-duty oils. This reduction is crucial in preventing clogging of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), a key component for meeting the stringent 2027 emission goals.
Key Benefits of Delo® 600 ADF
- Aftertreatment System Protection: By minimizing DPF clogging, Delo® 600 ADF helps maintain efficient operation and reduces downtime caused by costly maintenance.
- Extended Equipment Life: The advanced formula reduces wear on critical engine components, helping vehicles stay on the road longer and operate more reliably.
- Improved Fleet Reliability: With consistent and dependable performance, Delo® 600 ADF keeps fleets running smoothly, even under demanding conditions.
Prepare for 2027
For fleet operators, thoughtful preparation for the 2027 changes is essential. Whether upgrading to newer vehicles or seeking to extend the life of your current equipment, understanding how PC-12 will impact your operations is key to staying ahead. With innovative solutions like Delo® 600 ADF, Chevron is ready to help your fleet navigate these changes with confidence and ease.
