In addition to the Kicking Horse Canyon Project, there are currently 6 projects under construction as part of the Highway 1 – Kamloops to Alberta Four Laning Program. Projects are being coordinated amongst each other but can lead up to cumulative delays of 45 to 90 minutes for the entire route from Kamloops to Golden.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will be completing rehabilitation work on Alex Fraser Bridge (AFB) starting in June.
The AFB Modular Joints Replacement Project will address two joints requiring replacement on the bridge. The project is expected to complete construction in January 2022.
Traffic Impacts:
BCTA would like to remind carriers with drivers travelling along Highway 1 to use extra caution when travelling through the Kicking Horse Canyon and to educate drivers on designated rest areas along the route for commercial vehicles to ensure compliance with hours of service.

Traffic Impacts:
Kicking Horse Canyon Constructors (KHCC) has been implementing intermittent lane closures on Trans-Canada Highway through the Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 construction site throughout March and will extend the lane closures to April 10, 2021. In addition, KHCC will implement overnight full closures in the Kicking Horse Canyon on Hwy 1 from March 29 through to April 10, 2021.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has put up new signs at the 216 interchange and offramps to remind commercial drivers that access is only for local deliveries.
Heavy trucks are directed to use either 200 Street or 232 Street to travel North of the highway.
The northbound and southbound Custer Rest Area along Interstate 5 is closed to all travelers until further notice.
This temporary closure is an opportunity to reallocate current operational funding to improve safety, make necessary repairs, enhance aesthetics and focus on preventative maintenance work.
Alternative options:
BCTA encourages members who will be affected by highway closures related to the Kicking Horse Canyon Project to join our Kicking Horse Canyon Committee, which meets regularly with Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure representatives to receive project updates.
On March 30, 2021 from 2:00 to 3:00PM (PDT), the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) will provide a presentation and brief update regarding the coordination of construction activities planned for the TransCanada Highway.
The objective of this presentation is to ensure delays are mitigated as much as possible by coordinating projects and to provide feedback to MOTI on the best communication methods for highway users.
