The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is conducting a corridor planning study of Highway 37 and 37A to identify opportunities for improvements to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable movement of people and goods over the next 25 years.
As the winter season approaches, the BC Government is preparing for increased focus on winter maintenance and safety measures. BCTA has asked that the Province include carriers in the review of highway winter maintenance contractors, and they have partially responded to our request.
TransLink’s Burrard Peninsula Area Transport Plan (BP ATP) is identifying recommended actions related to transit, cycling, walking, driving and goods movement for the transportation network within the Burrard Peninsula. This area includes Burnaby, New Westminster, Vancouver, and Electoral Area A, which includes the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the surrounding University Endowment Lands (UEL).
Construction on the Trans-Canada Highway between Ford Road and Tappen Valley Road is underway to improve safety, reliability and efficiency for travellers and the movement of goods.

A new comprehensive transportation strategy for the Central Okanagan between Lake Country and Peachland looks at projects that will help support the economy and the movement of goods and create a cleaner environment.
The Central Okanagan Integrated Transportation Strategy (CO-ITS) recognizes Highway 97 as the hub of the area’s transportation network, connecting 10 urban centres and providing vital links to the Lower Mainland and Alberta. Several priority projects for Highway 97 recommended in the strategy include:
The Highway 91/17 and Deltaport Way Upgrade Project is now complete, providing improved safety for trucks along this major goods movement corridor. Several new and upgraded interchanges and intersection improvements have created better connectivity for transport trucks, saving time and reducing emissions.
The upgraded infrastructure has been estimated to improve travel times by as much as 15 minutes during peak times. Major improvements include:
The Kicking Horse Canyon Constructors (KHCC) will be implementing intermittent lane closures, overnight full closures and extended road closures on the Trans-Canada Highway for the Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 construction through October.

On October 4, 2023, a public open house will be held to provide Cache Creek and area residents with information regarding planned improvements to Highway 97.
The Highway 97 Cache Creek Crossing Restoration Project will include the installation of a bridge to replace the culvert under Highway 97 where it crosses Cache Creek. The bridge is designed to accommodate increases in peak water flows caused by climate change and will be built to ensure structural stability against erosion.
Highway 97 north of Summerland now has two lanes open, one in each direction. Temporary work has been completed to allow traffic access through the site of the rockslide.
Drivers are reminded that this portion of the road may need to be closed again with limited notice if it is deemed unsafe. The site will be at greater likelihood of closure should heavy rainfall occur.

Improvements to the surface on the road on the north approach to the Lions Gate Bridge will happen this month, with nighttime lane closures over two consecutive weekends, beginning Sept. 15, 2023.
