Traffic Impact: Overnight work on Malahat-Tunnel Hill
People travelling in the evenings along the Malahat section of Highway 1 near the Tunnel Hill project north of Victoria can expect delays as the project moves toward completion.
Beginning on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023, single-lane-alternating traffic will be in place overnight from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. This work is expected to take place four to five nights each week, including some Sunday nights, weather-dependent, until the project is complete this fall.
Travellers should expect delays of as much as 20 minutes through the site during the overnight work.
Highway 97 Open to Single-Lane-Alternating Traffic
Highway 97 north of Summerland is open to single-lane-alternating traffic. The section of highway was closed on August 28 after a rockslide.
Crews continue work to build a 150-metre-long berm between the wall and the bottom of the slope. The berm is partially complete and has significantly slowed movement of the material at the site, allowing the furthest lane to reopen to single-lane-alternating travel. Drivers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes at the site during peak travel times.
Traffic Impacts: Pattullo Bridge Project Update
Starting the week of August 28, construction of the new bridge deck in Surrey will begin.
While this work is underway, nighttime closures of Highway 17 in both directions between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. will be required for approximately three weeks. Closures are being implemented at night to minimize disruption to traffic. Closures will not be required every night and will be intermittent throughout the three-week period. Road signage will be used to indicate nights when the closures are required.
Detour routes will be clearly marked and are as follows:
Highway 19 Closure Between Port McNeill and Woss
Expect delays and prepare for a detour for those travelling along Highway 19 between Port McNeill and Woss.
Work is being undertaken requires the road to be closed in both directions. The highway will remain closed at the location around the clock, with a full-time detour in place until the project is complete in mid-September.
The 2.5-kilometre detour runs along rural forestry roads parallel to the highway, and will be accessible for all traffic, including oversized loads.
Traffic Impacts: Highway 1 Update
Work is underway to restore access on Highway 1 through the southern Interior. Highway 1 between Chase and Sorrento at the Blind Bay Road intersection reopened on Friday, Aug 25.
Highway 1 between Boston Bar and Lytton remains closed. As the Kookipi Creek wildfire is still active, progress on highway reopening will depend on the weather and local fire activity.
Highways 3, 5 and 99 are alternative routes between the Lower Mainland and Interior.

Highway 4 Closure Update
Highway 4 will be fully reopening to two-lane travel at Cameron Lake Bluffs before the Labour Day long weekend. Before this can happen, the highway will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2023.
Travellers are advised to plan their journeys around the closure period. The detour route will remain available until Highway 4 is fully reopened by Labour Day.
Kicking Horse Canyon – September 2023 Traffic Schedule
The Kicking Horse Canyon Constructors (KHCC) will be implementing intermittent lane closures, overnight full closures and extended (multi-day) road closures on the Trans-Canada Highway for the Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 construction through September.
